Facts Regarding Stainless Steel Cold Rolled Sheet

Cold rolled steel is basically hot rolled steel that has had additional process. The steel is processed further in cold reduction mills, wherever the material is cooled followed by tempering and/or tempers rolling. This method will manufacture steel with closer dimensional tolerances and an extensive range of surface finishes. The term Stainless steel cold rolled sheet is erroneously used on all products, when really this industry product name refers to the rolling of flat rolled sheet and coil products.

When meaning bar products, the term used is “cold finishing”, that typically consists of cold drawing and/or turning, grinding and sprucing. This method leads to higher yield points and has four main advantages:

Cold drawing will increase the yield and tensile strengths, usually eliminating additional pricey thermal treatments.

Turning gets obviate surface imperfections.
Grinding may narrow the initial size tolerance range.
Polishing improves surface end.

All cold merchandise give a superior surface end, and are superior in tolerance and straightness when put next to hot rolled.

Cold finished bars are usually more durable to figure with than hot rolled owing to the increased carbon content. However, this can’t be said about cold rolled sheet and hot rolled sheet. With these two products of stainless steel, the cold rolled product has low carbon content and it’s usually treated, creating it softer than hot rolled sheet.
